With the purpose of commemorating the two kings Dinh Tien Hoang and Le Dai Hanh, Hoa Lu Ancient Capital Festival, which is held annually from the 10th to the 13th of March of the lunar calendar in Truong Yen commune, Hoa Lu district, is the last but not least element that impresses visitors to Hoa Lu. There are two parts included in this festival: ritual at the water procession at Truong Yen water station situated on Hoang Long River and worship at the two temples of King Le and King Dinh. Entertainment activities includes performing dragon dance, playing chess, competing in writing Han script, performing Co lau tap tran, etc. This Festival brings back the memories of the old times, and helps the young people to have chance to know more about the traditions of their ancestors.

On the way from Hue to Hanoi, Hoa Lu is a convenient stop or if you are already in Hanoi, let’s book a day tour to Ninh Binh which is only 90km to the south of the capital city. It is not difficult to get from most travel agents in Hanoi a day tour from Hanoi to visit Hoa Lu. Normally, such a tour also features a boat ride at Tam Coc. Beginning in the morning, this day tour ends at the first part of the afternoon. It takes about 2 hours to cover the distances of 110km from Hanoi to Hoa Lu by car.

It takes around fifteen minutes to cover the distance of 14km from Ninh Binh railway station to Hoa Lu by motorbike. Getting from Ninh Binh, you will have to head north on Tran Hung Dao. Right after the big junction, you will travel about 2 kilometers by the bus before taking a left onto Duong Trang An. You cannot miss this extremely wide road with a large gated entrance less than 500m down. You will eventually pass Trang An boat station by following this road and appreciating the scenery en route. A few kilometers further on is situated Hoa Lu, keep to the right at the fork in the road. You will have to contend with tour buses even though the roads are good quality. If you need, it is possible to fill up with petrol on Tran Hung Dao near the junction of Trang An.

Entry is VND 10,000/person with parking fee at VND 15,000 (less than $1) for a motorbike.
